Get ready to heat things up this sprint with a neon pout.
“Bold lips are a killer trend this spring," says Sandria Marie, owner of Brazen Cosmetics."Everyone can wear them no matter your age or style." Marie advises keeping makeup toned down when wearing bold lip color.
“Opt for a subtle shimmery ivory or taupe shadow with a hint of brown liner. Brows should be bold, but not too dark. For the face, skin should be flawless and matte. Bronzer or neutral blush should be used to not distract from the brightness of the mouth.”
“Bold lips are back on the scene because women are tired of blah, pale lips,” says image consultant Sandy Dumont. “They are sexy and alluring, if done right. True red and cherry red colors, also fuchsia, are more elegant than bright orange ones. Orange always has a harsh edge.”
“With so much play on color and imagination this spring, bold hues give a sneak peek at your unique personality,” says Shana King, Senior Director of Beauty and Education for Anisa International. “Poppy red, tangerine and saturated pinks pair well with the matte skin trends we’re seeing. This really allows the lips to shine.”
An easy trick to make the color last? King suggests applying foundation all over lips first, setting with powder, and then filling the mouth with nude lip liner to prevent color from bleeding.
When it comes to a bright pout, less is more. Let your lips do the talking and choose minimal makeup for the rest of the face.
When asked which celebrity best mastered this look for the season, King picks actress Jessica Alba. "She matches her coloring perfectly by accentuating, not distracting," she says.
Before you apply lipstick, make sure your puckers are chap-free, says Beverly Hills-based beauty expert Anastasia Soare. “You want to make sure your lips are a smooth palette as a bright, bold lip is unforgiving if they are peeling and dry."
Looking to channel your inner bombshell this spring? Take a cue from artist Nicki Minaj. “For the bolder girls, pair with a thick winged black liner for a new update to the pinup look,” says Marie.
If you’re looking to try a new fashion trend, consider pairing your new couture with a pink, fuchsia or red lipstick for a polished, runway-ready look. “I think bold lips are gaining popularity because it’s a very easy way to instantly transform your look and complexion," Marie says. “A pop of color makes the face look youthful, fashion-forward and fun!”
If you have thin lips, a bright hue will add more oomph to your pout. Just be careful which shade you choose this season. “Please only go bright bold if you have thin lips as dark bold lips will age you unmercifully,” warns Soare. You can get inspiration from Lea Michele’s rose pink, which turned heads turn on the red carpet.
Bright red lips may never go out of style, but why not think pink this spring?
