You might have seen riveted metal lamps kicking around online lately.

Made by Target and Circa Lighting, they run you $49.99 (without the shade) and $672 respectively.

Buy vs. DIY

All in all, this version ran me about $34, including the lampshade. I didn't have any of the materials (except the tin) to begin with, but you might find an old lamp to disassemble and re-use. I think it's also possible to do this project with faux rivets. If you don't want to invest in a rivet tool, glue down the metal instead, and insert some small 4mm brads to get a similar studded look. But this is what I did:

(ApartmentTherapy.com)
What You'll Need:

Materials:

Tools:

  • Drill with bits
  • Scissors (a pair you don't care about)
  • Pen or marker
  • Rivet tool; $9.97
  • Measuring tape and/or ruler
(ApartmentTherapy.com)
Step 1:

Measure the distance around the tin canister, and make a note of it. Then, measure its height and divide by four. These are the two dimensions of the metal sheets that will cover the lamp base.

(ApartmentTherapy.com)
Step 2:

Measure out four pieces of the aluminum flashing and cut them out with the scissors. Careful! The edges of the metal are very sharp and it's easy to cut yourself.

(ApartmentTherapy.com)
Step 3:

Wrap each piece of metal around the canister and tape into place. Twist until the seams are where you'd like them to be.

Tip:Don't place the tape in the corners. It's harder to get the tape off later, once the rivets are in.

(ApartmentTherapy.com)
Step 4:

Once the metal sheets are taped and in place, mark with a pen where the rivets should go on each corner. Using your drill (and a bit slightly larger than 1/8"), make holes in each of the corners.

(ApartmentTherapy.com)
Step 5:

Now you're ready for the rivets. First, make sure that you have the correct head on your rivet tool; most come with several sizes. Insert the nubby end of a rivet through the first hole, leaving the longer end sticking out. Insert the rivet all the way into the rivet tool and squeeze the handle. You might have to do this a couple of times before you hear a click.

(ApartmentTherapy.com)
Tip:

The tool will automatically clip off the long metal piece after the rivet is in place. Make sure you empty out the rivet tool head after each rivet, before you start the next one. Any excess metal in the head will mess up the process going forward.

(ApartmentTherapy.com)
Step 6:

Do the same thing for the remaining holes.

(ApartmentTherapy.com)
Step 7:

Once all the rivets are done, drill two more holes: one in the middle of the lid, large enough to fit the nipple from the lamp kit, and a second at the base of the tin, large enough for the lamp cord to feed through.

Tip: If the hole you drill doesn't come out clean, take a pair a pliers to it and bend back the edges a little bit until the nipple fits inside the hole. Don't worry if it's not pretty. Other parts from the lamp kit will cover it up.

Additional Steps:
  • Cover the canister and lid with several coats of gold spray paint.
  • Secure the socket base (from the lamp kit) to the lid of the canister, then feed the lamp cord through the hole in the base and up through. Wire the socket, according to instructions on the packaging, or using this post for reference.
  • Screw in a lightbulb, attach the lamp shade, and you're good to go.

Note: If your chosen lamp shade needs a harp, you'll need to purchase that attachment separately

How To Avoid a Makeup Meltdown This Summer

Say goodbye to smears and streaks.

Prep Your Skin

During the summer, avoid using harsh cleaners with alcohol that can actually dry your skin out, causing it to produce more oil. Instead, Chanel and Bobbi Brown makeup artist Troy Edwards recommends using a more gentle foaming cleanser. “The sun can also cause your skin to feel dry and flaky. Remove dead skin with a granule exfoliator or use an enzyme-based one,” says Edwards. “I personally use one made of fruit acids because they are gentler on my skin.” Finish with a refreshing tonic (for dry skin) or toner (for oily skin) to remove any excess grime.

Moisturize

When it comes to beating the heat, it’s especially important for skin to stay properly hydrated. Edwards says to look for a lightweight moisturizer with SPF to protect your face from the sun’s wrinkle-causing rays.  Cynthia Rivas likes MAC's Oil Control Lotion, which moisturizes while keeping shine away. As an alternative, beauty expert Hilary Kennedy prefers using a tinted B.B. cream, which combines moisturizer, concealer and, depending on the brand, sun protection.

Look for Primer

“A pro tip for extending the wear of your makeup and preventing it from melting in the summer heat is to be sure to always use a primer before applying any makeup,” says Sephora's Jennie Carranza. “I love the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15 because it’s a mineral-based, water-resistant formula that protects, neutralizes, de-shines and preps the skin for long wear makeup.”

Is Foundation Necessary?

Foundation can provide excellent coverage for those with problematic skin, but the last thing you want to do during a steamy day is wear more makeup than necessary. Edwards says to ditch it and use a self tanner instead. “Having a tan gives the illusion of your skin appearing more even, hence skipping the foundation altogether,” he explains. “If you feel it is too messy, then just use a powder or shimmer bronzer instead.” If you can’t bear to go without foundation, make it last. “Use a foundation with a mattifying formula and focus on the nose, forehead and chin where shine tends to develop the fastest,” says celebrity makeup artist Le’Aura Luciano. MAC’s Matchmaster SPF 15 Foundation provides a similar effect with buildable coverage.

Keep Oil at Bay

"Rice papers are great to keep in your purse to blot oil and sweat from your face without having to pile on powder,” says Kennedy about stopping sweat from causing a makeup meltdown. “If you require something a bit heavier, use a translucent powder,” she says.

Play Up the Eyes

Keep things simple with a swipe of waterproof mascara and/or eyeliner, and ditch crease-causing eyeshadow. For nighttime, Kennedy recommends investing in waterproof versions of your favorite eyeliner, mascara and smudge-proof shadow, which will last longer. “Makeup Forever has a great selection of waterproof cosmetics in a variety of colors,” says Kennedy. “But if using a regular liner or mascara, line the top lashes only. Lining under the eyes can lead to the dreaded raccoon look."

(Sephora)
Blush

"If you have a tan, using a pop of color on the cheeks can give you a healthy looking glow,” says Edwards. A great product worth snagging is Josie Maran’s Magic Marker Lip & Cheek Stain.

Pretty Pout

Save those heavy lipsticks for the fall. During the summertime, it’s all about long-lasting lip stains, which are lighter to apply, but can come in sheer or deep pigments for day or night. Makeup artists like Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain because it goes on smoothly and comes in an array of vibrant seasonal colors.
