10 Disasters That Can Hit Your House While You're on Vacation

$

A summer getaway is supposed to be a time for rest and relaxation.

But if your heart is on vacation while your head is worrying about home, you won't get much out of your time off.

That's why we've brought you this handy guide of the top 10 bad things that can befall your house when you leave it alone.

READ: What Really Happens In a House Fire

(ThisOldHouse.com)
Your House Burns Down

One of summer's many lightning storms can start a fire, and with no one to call 911 it can take out a whole house. The best defense, says TOH general contractor Tom Silva, is lightning rods. "This is not by any means a homeowner job," he warns. "You need a pro to install them." Any highly placed metal protrusion on your house should be grounded, in fact, including weather vanes and satellite dishes.

Don't overlook the health of your wiring, as well. Curtis Niles Sr. of Armored Home Inspections in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, and President of the National Association of Home Inspectors, advises homeowners to keep up with maintenance. "Wiring is the last thing on a homeowner's mind, but I've seen exterior service cables in poor condition all too often." he says. "If there's short or a spark in the line, a fire can start, and you won't be there to put it out."

Thieves Take All Your Stuff

Unmowed grass, piles of newspapers, and revealing posts on Facebook might as well be an open invitation to burglars, says Ralph Sevinor, President of Wayne Alarm Systems in Lynn, Massachusetts. Sevinor suggests putting a hold on the mail, asking a neighbor to park in the driveway, testing your alarm system, and keeping your travel plans off the internet. "Even if it's your kid on Facebook telling her 2,300 friends about the family trip to Hawaii, you have to watch out. That message can get picked up by criminals who troll the internet constantly," says Sevinor.

(ThisOldHouse.com)
The Attic Fills With Critters—Dead and Alive

All it takes is one small entry point and wasps, bees, squirrels, or bats can take over this seldom-visited space. Then they build nests, chew through wiring or framing, or just make your home their final resting place. "Animals can get trapped and then die. After a few days, the stench can render a house uninhabitable," says Los Angeles–based architect Leigh Jerrard. "Make sure crawlspace and eave vents are securely screened with hardware cloth or welded-wire fabric," says Jerrard.

Tom Silva recommends that you do a visual inspection all around the exterior, both before you go away and after you get back. "Look for vulnerable spots—holes under the soffit, flashing lifting on the chimney, rot around the windows," he says. "A bat can climb into a hole the size of your fingertip. Wasps and yellow jackets can find their way in through a tiny crevice." Patch, caulk, and replace as needed.

(ThisOldHouse.com)
Your Lawn Dies

Extreme weather can kill your lawn, or leave it vulnerable to insects and blight, if you aren't there to catch warning signs. Billie Lee, a Walker County master gardener in Huntsville, Texas, says that drought conditions can fry the grass, while excessive rain encourages disease. "My neighbors lost their lawn to a fungus called Take-all patch. They came home from a vacation and had to uproot the whole yard and start over." TOH landscape contractor Roger Cook recommends asking a neighbor to watch out for wilt or brown spots in the lawn and leaving behind the number for your lawn service. "All you can do is depend on your good neighbor, and promise to do the same for him when he goes away," says Roger. "It's a fair trade."

READ: Discover Your Home's Top 10 Danger Zones

(ThisOldHouse.com)
Your Garden Dies

The best defense against wilted flowers and shrubs is a well-established garden. "Older plants have had time to get acclimated and should survive a week without watering," says Roger. But a newer garden is more vulnerable. If you're planting just before going on vacation, mix Terra-Sorb into the soil. The crystals are designed to slow-release moisture, so plant roots won't go totally dry.

Container plants need more coddling. Billie Lee suggests placing plants next to the bathtub and filling the bottom of the tub with water. Then put one end of some cotton rope in the water and the other end in the pot. "The rope works like a wick and keeps your plants from getting thirsty." Better yet, says Roger, put the rope's end in the toilet tank; it will refill itself when the water level drops too low.

Finding the Most Flattering Shorts For Your Body

You wear short shorts!

(Reuters)
Know Your Body Type

“If you’re very short, cropped shorts that go under the knee will only make you look shorter,” explains celebrity stylist Anthony Henderson. “Taller people should avoid wearing ultra-short shorts that show too much leg.” No matter your height, Henderson says shorts hitting your midway will be the most flattering and are the most workable for day or night.

(Reuters)
Get Longer Legs in Seconds

Wish you had longer legs? Don’t fret! Jocelyn Sanchez and Miranda Baham of personal stylist site Stitch Fix say ladies with this dilemma can take a cue from country crooner Taylor Swift. “To add length to shorter legs, throw on a high waisted pair with a shorter seam and add a heel with a bit of height,” they say.

(Reuters)
Embrace Your Curves

Got curves? Flaunt them with the right pair of shorts specifically made to enhance your sexy shape. “For curvier ladies, the cut is crucial,” say Sanchez and Baham. “For extra coverage, try slim-fitted dark Bermuda shorts with a longer inseam and a higher rise in the back. Again, you can always add a heel for extra height if you want to elongate your silhouette.” If your slim fitted shorts don’t include the right cut, you can always take them to a tailor who will create it for you.

(Reuters)
Get a Tailor

Tailors are crucial for making any outfit, including your shorts, fit perfectly. Model and fashion expert Jaimie Hilfiger believes any woman, regardless of her age, can wear shorts, as long as she visits her tailor to get the look down pat. “A major rule is to always make sure your shorts are tailored,” she explains. “It doesn’t matter what type they are. Having them tailored to fit properly avoids the problem of looking messy or exposing too much.”

(Reuters)
Go Shorter (If You Dare)

“Short shorts certainly aren’t for everyone, but there are so many options out there now that no one needs to fear them,” says New York City-based stylist Sara Cooper. “Short shorts are a great way to show off your legs, especially if you’re long and lean.”

(Reuters)
Invest in Walking Shorts

If you find shorts, well, too short for daily wear, Cecelia Myers, chief styling officer at online personal styling service CakeStyle, suggests investing in walking shorts. “A walking short ends a few inches above the knee and keeps you cool and covered,” she explains. “Trina Turk does a great walking short every year in a lightweight fabric. And don’t forget, your shorts should be loose, never tight. I often buy my shorts a size or two bigger than I would buy my denim.”

(Reuters)
Accessorize

Shorts aren’t just for casual wear. According to Hilfiger, you can easily dress up your pair with the right accessories. “Try a belt or choose a pair of shorts with added embellishments to spice up a plain look,” says Hilfiger. “A fitted jacket with elegant heels will transition your daytime shorts into the evening perfectly.” If you’re wearing a high-waisted pair, Hilfiger suggest going bold with a crop top or even a bra top with an open jacket over it.

(Reuters)
Prep Your Legs

Before rocking your shorts this summer, make sure your legs are in tip-top shape. “You must take care of your legs as you would your face,” says Myers. “Exfoliate them to get your skin glowing.” Myers adds you make your own scrub at home with sugar, untoasted sesame oil and peppermint to remove dead skin and to promote a natural glow. Also, Myers says you should protect your legs from wrinkle-causing sun rays by applying sunscreen daily. “If you want a little color, go for a sunless tanner,” she says.

(Associated Press)
Look for Couture

If you only buy two shorts this year, Henderson says to make sure you have one that's loose-fitting for day and a couture pair for night. “(Couture shorts) are often very fitted to the body and made with lustrous fabrics,” he explains. “Pair them with a top that doesn’t overshadow and shoes that compliments them.” When it comes to evening shorts, look for unique fabrics and designs, such as lace overlays or floral prints, which stylists say are on-trend and work for everyone.

Keep the spark alive!

(POPSUGAR Love & Sex)
Don't Go to Bed Mad

Or annoyed for that matter. The resentment can build and you'll probably end up irritated by your partner without even remembering why. Resolve any minor issues before you go to bed or resolve to let them go.

(POPSUGAR Love & Sex)
Flirt

Flirting can make you feel sexy and your partner desired. Give your guy a knowing look while you're brushing your teeth, touch his arm while you're chatting about your day, or have a make-out session while you're watching a DVD.

(POPSUGAR Love & Sex)
Spend Less Time Together

It might sound counterintuitive, but spending too much time with a partner can make you stop feeling sexual. So make plans with your friends, grab your book and head to a cafe, or have a weekend to yourself.

(POPSUGAR Love & Sex)
Compliment More Than You Complain

If something genuinely upsets you, speak up. But make sure that's not the only time you share your feelings with your mate. Make an effort to express your appreciation for your partner with specific and sincere compliments, and I bet you he'll be more open to some of the concerns you have, too.

(POPSUGAR Love & Sex)
Own Your Own Happiness

Without knowing it, you might be taking out your life concerns on your partner. Addressing these frustrations will take pressure off your relationship. If you hate your job, spruce up your résumé and start looking for a new one; if you find yourself super stressed, take up yoga; or if you'd love more platonic companionship, get to know people at work or join a social sports team.
